A big milestone this morning, Uber has agreed to classify UK drivers as workers entitled to benefits; these include minimum wage, holiday pay & pensions. Drivers will now receive greater protection under the workers status with the flexibility they’ve always had.
The minimum wage is £8.72 and this rises to £8.91 next month. Drivers still retain the freedom to choose when and how long they drive for, however they will not receive payment for the time they spend waiting for rides. All drivers will be paid holiday time based on 12.07% of their earnings, paid out on a fortnightly basis
The new rates will come on top of free insurance to cover sickness, injury and maternity and paternity payments which have been in place for all drivers since 2018.
