The UK electric vehicle market hit a major milestone last month, as battery electric vehicle (BEV) uptake surged by 29.1%, marking the best month on record for BEV registrations. With 72,779 new electric cars hitting the road, BEVs captured 23.3% of the total market, underscoring a growing momentum in the nation’s shift toward zero-emission driving.
This remarkable growth was fuelled by a combination of manufacturer discounting and the introduction of the UK Government’s new Electric Car Grant (ECG) — a move that appears to be paying immediate dividends. The ECG, designed to make EVs more affordable for everyday drivers, provided a significant boost to qualifying models.
Industry Confidence Rising
Commenting on the figures, Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), said:
“Electrified vehicles are powering market growth after a sluggish summer – and with record ZEV uptake, massive industry investment is paying off, despite demand still trailing ambition. The Electric Car Grant will help to break down one of the barriers holding back more drivers from making the switch – and tackling remaining roadblocks, by unlocking infrastructure investment and driving down energy costs, will be crucial to the success of the industry and the environmental goals we share.”
Hawes’ comments highlight the dual nature of the current EV landscape — one of optimism and momentum, but also of challenges that must still be addressed. While affordability and choice are improving, the pace of infrastructure rollout and energy cost stability remain key to sustaining the current growth trajectory.
A Market Shift Accelerating
With nearly one in four new cars now fully electric, the UK automotive market appears to be at an inflection point. The combination of government support, competitive pricing, and growing consumer confidence is turning electric mobility from a niche choice into a mainstream one.
If this trajectory continues, 2025 could mark the year when BEVs move from early adoption to mass-market appeal, accelerating the UK’s journey toward its net-zero transport goals.
